The Clifford Shorney Optician of the Year Award was presented to Marilyn Smith at Inside Optics 2013 held on Sunday April 21. Marilyn had her start in the optical profession during high school working as a receptionist in an optical store in Nappanee. Marilyn graduated from the Georgian College Dispensing Optician Program in May 1981. She has been a licensed Ontario optician since January 1982 in the GTA where she started her own mobile industrial eye wear company. Marilyn accepted a position at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in May 1988 as lab demonstrator and student clinical supervisor. In August 1990 she was promoted to manager of Optical Services as well she continued her teaching assignments and clinical supervision.
In 2004 Marilyn accepted a Clinical Faculty Lecturer position. She has been instrumental in educating a generation of optometrists on the capabilities, expertise and collaboration that our profession has to offer.
Marilyn has collaborated on many projects over the years including the design and development of spectacles for patients with low vision needs. She collaborated to develop outreach programs to local schools, nursing homes and retirement homes but her true passion is her mission work that she does in Jamaica.
Marilyn has written and published articles in several magazines on various topics and also has been a researcher on published research reports. She is a lecturer on various optically related topics to opticians, optometrists, and optical and optometric assistants. Marilyn has held a position on the educational committee of the Ontario Optician’s Association.
In her spare time Marilyn is a motivational speaker. She always has a smile on her face and boosts the morale of those around her. She is energetic, inspiring, compassionate and kind. She has gone above and beyond to benefit patients and all of the players in the eye care field. Marilyn is truly an an excellent ambassador for opticians in her capacity of educating optometry students in dispensing. Marilyn is an inspiration to all who know her both personally and professionally. Congratulations Marilyn!
